The second edition of Karigar Mela, organized by the Assam chapter of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) concluded on a high note on Saturday i.e 9th December 2023, after nine days of bringing together artisans from various parts of the country and providing them with a platform to exhibit their skills and products.
The exhibition was held at Ganesh Mandir Ground, Khanapara Sports and Cultural Organisation, Khanapara, Guwahati, Assam from 09:30 am - 09:00 pm
Karigar Mela 2.0 was a national-level event aimed at providing exposure to indigenous craftsmen and farmers engaged in organic cultivation. “The aim is to empower the rural artisans to align their products with market demand and enhance their representation. NABARD's role in fostering wholesale integrated rural markets covering various aspects of rural activities, from crop cultivation to non-farm activities like handloom and handicraft, was evident throughout the event”, a senior NABARD official mentioned. The second edition of Karigar Mela placed special emphasis on the promotion of millet-based products.
"The primary objective of Karigar Mela 2.0 is to provide exposure to indigenous craftsmen as well as farmers engaged in organic cultivation of millet and horticulture crops. This exposure aims to empower participants to align products with market demand and enhance their representation."
NABARD fosters wholesale integrated rural markets covering various aspects of rural activities, from crop cultivation to non-farm activities like handloom and handicraft.
"In line with the central government's declaration of 2023 as the 'International Year of Millet', NABARD initiated a project involving 1,200 farmers across 23 districts of Assam to promote millet production," Naveen Dhingra CGM informed. NABARD's Millet Mission was launched on January 9, 2023, and it is offering technical guidance and connecting farmers with market platforms like the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) to sell their products.
Aside from product exhibitions, Dhingra mentioned that the fair will feature a two-hour cultural program from 6 to 8 p.m., highlighting the traditions of the North East. A food court offering traditional cuisines from the region will also be a major attraction.
The Exhibition also aims to provide the participants with exposure to urban consumers, market demands and customer preferences for improving their products. Angel Business Promoters of Mizoram, on behalf of Mizoram RO, also participated in the Mela. Two artisans under the project of PODF viz.Israel Ramtharnghaka and Zothanpari participated in the Mela and showcased the various products of Mizoram artisans.
